Observing is the discipline of watching your default run before you do anything about it. The move you reliably make. What sets it off. What it protects. What it costs. Most of us skip straight from noticing a pattern to trying to fix it, which usually means the pattern goes underground rather than away.
The point is not to judge the default. It is to see it clearly enough to choose around it later. A default you have watched is a default you can lead. A default you only rationalize keeps running on its own terms.
Back to the premise: a default is a strength with a failure mode. The reason Observing is hard is that the strength is real, so the easiest move is to defend it. That's just how I'm wired. That defense is the rationalization that keeps the cost invisible. This move holds both sides in view at once: where the same move served you, and where it quietly cost you something you wanted.
The same default shows up across very different moments, which is why watching it once teaches you to spot it everywhere. You are not cataloging a hundred behaviors. You are learning the shape of one move that recurs.
Each energy has a recognizable default. The lens helps you spot yours fast. The work is watching it run, not excusing it. No default here is better than another.

Your profile describes a preference, not a flaw. You're reading it to watch the default — not to fix anything.
